"the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.” wikipedia
Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Conrado de Quiros wrote a piece in his column pointing out that Chip Tsao’s article “is funny and witty.” De Quiros further added; “Frankly, I don’t know how we can fail to understand or appreciate satire. We have a robust tradition of it. Jose Rizal was past master at it, writing slyly, funnily and bitingly about the Spanish rulers, especially the friars. But maybe it’s not just that tradition we’re losing, or have lost, it’s the capacity to read itself. Ultimately that may be the true satirical, ironical and cruel footnote on us: We haven’t just become a nation of servants, we’ve become a nation of illiterates.”

While walking around Macau on a simple day tour, Mojo and Andrea Manzano (aka DJ Andi-9) made their way to the historic
After their tour about town, Andi-9 excused herself to use the restroom while Mojo Jojo waited for her before heading back to their hotel. He patiently sat himself on a park bench at one of
“Hey, are you a Filipino? You look like a Filipino.” asked one of the men in a very thick Chinese accent.
Mojo (who looks very “Filipino” with his kayumanggi skin and pinoy features) proudly replied. “Yes I am.”
Then after some drunken chuckles, the Chinese man said, “But it is only Saturday… why are you here?”
“Sunday is your day off, not today. Shouldn’t you be at work cleaning something?” said one of the Chinese man’s drunken companions, assuming that the very Filipino-looking Mojo Jojo was a domestic helper.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk!” chimed another of the men as he wagged his finger at Mojo.
Then the first Chinese man added, “You will get yourself into trouble.” This drew a hearty laugh from his drunken companions.
Instead of starting a fight with these rude and ignorant men, Mojo just smiled and let the inebriated posse on their way.
I asked Mojo why he didn’t defend himself and he said, “Why would I? It’s one thing to argue with ignorant people, but dealing with drunk ignorant people is another story.”
When asked if he took offense to the comments of those Chinese men, Mojo replied: “I am not embarrassed by their comments. I know I look very pinoy and I am proud of my ethnicity. I don’t take offense if they assumed me to be a domestic helper, there’s nothing wrong with that. There is no shame in earning an honest living, whatever your vocation might be. The whole encounter just shows how close-minded or lacking in experiences those men are. What I do find offensive is the condescending nature and plain ignorance of those drunkards.”
Mojo then recounted to me another “

The students immediately asked, “Did we offend you? Did we say something wrong?” The students were obviously oblivious as to their careless indiscretion.
Andi was speechless and could not continue the on-cam interview. It was Grace Lee who addressed the students pointing out how ignorant and offensive their supposedly harmless “joke” was. Not only was it chauvinistic, but it only demonstrated how little they knew about Filipinos.
“Shame on you!” said Grace Lee. “And to think, you go to an

China man says to Mojo : "this is only a satyr ok but are you a domestic helper because you look Filipino? "
"This is only a satyr Mojo but are you a gay, filipino domestic helper?"
it is just a matter of geography as well. that writer probably did not know that here in the U.S. Filipinos are known for being doctors and nurses by the americans :)
What will you expect if the foreign land treated us filipinos a domestic helper. Because that the job that filipina apply in those country.
There was a time when the Chinese IN the Philippines have been ridiculed to no end, and for no reason. "Intsik laway", "tubong lugaw", "tsekwa", "beho" etc. Could it be that Pinoys are one of the most racist groups -- our jokes constantly have been laden with malice -- that we often fail to distinguish between trespass and triviality?
"Intsik laway", "tubong lugaw", "tsekwa", "beho" .... YOU FORGOT mukhang TIM YAP!

intellectual arrogance of the undergrads!
Dear Brian Gorrell
Filipino youth shared their community's experiences of racism and anti-racism organizing on a world stage at the Second Session of the PrepCom Meetings in Geneva for the United Nations World Conference Against Racism... Filipino youth are targeted for racist attacks, beaten up, and verbally abused. These Filipino youth are then criminalized by the police and blamed by the school administrations because their excuse is that these youth are becoming more 'visible' in Canadian society, effectively ignoring their highly marginalized situation as immigrants and children of migrant workers. Filipino youth's demands for safety measures are ignored by institutions like the Vancouver School Board that shows little regard for the daily threats against the well being of Filipino youth citing that "racism does not exist in Vancouver high schools"!

Filipina housemaid called Nena Ruiz found herself a virtual slave in the household of a Hollywood movie executive, working 18-hour days for next to no pay and receiving markedly worse treatment than the family's two dogs...The predicament of Filipinos working as domestics in the US, many of them illegally, is a big issue in their native country. The MANILA TIMES commented on the Ruiz case:
"The harsh treatment of many foreign maids in the US is well documented. Among the worst offenders, according to State Department and independent reports, are members of the diplomatic community and those working in international organisations.... The decision puts exploitative employers on notice that their abuse of domestic help will not be tolerated."
Filipino Voices: I don’t see why my good friend Manolo Quezon should find himself apologizing to Reyna Elena for correctly appreciating the literary and journalistic nature of Chip Tsao to begin with. (He apologizes for something else but it’s actually beside the point.) The recent satirical piece on the Spratley Islands brouhaha between China and the Philippines by Chip Tsao in his Politically Incorrect column for Hong Kong Magazine, has “sparked outrage” according to one broadsheet’s headline in part for labelling the Filipinos “a nation of servants.” Strangely enough most of those calling for Chip Tsao’s head on a platter, don’t seem to mind it very much when one of their countrymen calls their OFWs “Toilet Bowl Cleaners of the World.” At least Chip Tsao has an outrageous sense of humor that is so in one’s face quite a number seem clueless as to its presence…
Manolo also points to Ms. Connie Veneracion’s “lack of affection” for Mr. Chip Tsao:
The Spratly article is not the first time he’s taken a swipe at Filipino women either — see this. Now, I don’t like dignifying bad taste with indignation. Writings like his probably generate enough controversy to sell newspapers and books, it ain’t my style but I don’t have to do what so many others have done in similar cases (Malu Fernandez, Desperate Housewives and Henry Enfield). My interest in Chip Tsao, his style and his article is to point out that low class and tacky journalism is not peculiar to the Philippines. It’s everywhere.
here we go again, do we always have to potray our "lahing api"?
the truth is, the world sees us as a country of either maids or nurses!
what else has philippines has to offer.
its sad, but who is to blame?

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return from the trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad."
"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they have four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.
We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.
We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us and they have friends to protect them." With this, the boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."
Too many times we forget what we have and concentrate on what we don't have. That is one person's worthless object is another's prize possession.
It is all based on one's perspective. Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks to God for the bounty we have been provided by Him instead of worrying about wanting more.
Let the rich man then say, “that I am poor because I neglected my soul to feed my sinful desires. Now I lost everything that I lived for and my soul is burning in this eternal fire.”
Let the poor man say that I am rich- my treasures are stored in Heaven and I have the key.
Leviticus 25:47-48 "If an alien or a temporary resident among you becomes rich and one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells himself to the alien living among you or to a member of the alien's clan, he retains the right of redemption."
what can i say but the righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked err Conrado has no such concern!
wawa naman mojo- “Sunday is your day off, not today. Shouldn’t you be at work cleaning something?” said one of the Chinese man’s drunken companions, assuming that the very Filipino-looking Mojo Jojo was a domestic helper." So what did you do Amiel?

@Anonymous,
Mas mayaman ang China kaysa sa US. United States is only rich in debts.
Grabe ang slurs na yun kay Andi and Mojo...
Phew.
Mark Twain says “The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot.” Say sorry Conrado!
Charles Darwin said if the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin. Add to the sins of the institution Conrado de Quiros and that makes you Beelzebub incarnate!
One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.

Well what can we do? The identity of being a nation of domestic helpers is now permanently attached to us Filipinos. It's like in the last part where germans are nazi's, koreans are makers f TV, and so on.
If only the government can provide jobs to its citizens. Hay.
prejudices... everyone regardless of race has one or more in them. it is how you deal with it, when subjected to such humiliation, whether it will continue or stop it right on its tracks. being here in the states, a foreign country, it cannot be avoided that i encounter bigots; staring down or giving a cold shoulder in return normally do the trick. it is a waste of time arguing with a complete stranger... strangle the culprit or leave him hanging in thin air by not falling into the trap of showing any reaction to a stupid remark or action.
The fact of the matter is that stereotyping occurs everywhere. Everyone is guilty of it.
People in countries where they have very little exposure to Filipinos besides what they see everyday (domestics, construction workers, nurses, or whatever) will absolutely tend to lump Filipinos in one job category or another.
Ganoon din naman tayo. Sa Pilipinas, kapag maitim o hindi mukhang mayaman, tatawagin nating "mukhang katulong". At bakit parang generic term na for maid ang "manang", and generic term for driver or houseboy ang "manong"? Bakit, lahat ba ng Ilocano domestic helper?
Yes, it's true that those people you cited in your anecdotes were rude (whether intentionally or unintentionally). But you also have to look at the overall picture. Kung araw-araw ang nakikita lang nila na Pinoy ay mga katulong, natural lang na ang initial assumption nila when they encounter a new Pinoy is that the Pinoy is a katulong.
Parang nung 1970s sa Manila. Pag ang mga Pilipino nakakita ng Bumbay, ang automatic assumption ng Pilipino is that the Bumbay is a peddler of kulambo and cheap blankets. O pag nakakita ng Vietnamese assumption kaagad eh yung Vietnamese ay isang walang pera at walang trabahong refugee.
My point is that stereotyping is universal. And that stereotypes usually begin with a grain of truth, no matter how small or tangential. Rude nga ang mga Inchik sa story mo, pero parang feeling ko naiinis ka kasi ayaw mong matawag na isang katulong or driver or houseboy, because you think that such a position is beneath you.

What we've become are calloused, snooty intellectuals apathetic of the needs of our brethren!

Tess Romano says " sadly, illiteracy is also one of the main barriers between the classes. And low-class individuals struggling with education and literacy are often kept on that level of non-accomplishment by the higher classes who lack money problems. Society will remain on this slow deteriorating cycle unless the illiterate populations around the world either teach themselves or programs are instituted by officials or anyone who cares, because imagining the world as a more educated place with people armed with literacy and simply knowledge would just be too far-fetched."
Maybe de Quiros can bridge the gap by teaching the domestic helpers how to read and write... In that way they can be called literate yaya!
Areas of illiteracy often exist within supposedly "literate" individuals... I am functionally illiterate in the realms of music and sports. I rely on them for guidance and knowledge; I do not choose to heighten my literacy in either of these areas.
But it seems de Quiros and Quezon know it all. They should indeed go in the ring and have a boxing match with Amiel at Elorde Gym!
While most Asian countries are taking concrete steps to increase real spending on education in comparison to the size of their economies, the Philippines is moving back and taking the other direction. The real problem is because our country fails to understand the importance of a good EDUCATION!
Let's learn a thing or two from Amiel's lolo: In the report of Bro. Andrew Gonzales in 1959, which was renamed Wikang Pambansa by President Manuel L. Quezon. The rationale was because of one of the most famous longitudinal experiment of Dr. Jose V. Aguilar.
The Aguilar experiment indicated that children learned more effectively, and were better able to apply what they learned in schools in their homes and communities when the local “mother tongue” was used.
These experiments provided empirical evidence on the pedagogical benefits of using local languages as medium of instruction.
So I advice you to speak and write in "wikang pambansa".
James mali ka.
Dr. Aguilar's study proves that English should have been used throughout the country at MALING MALI si Pres. Manuel Quezon. That is why Dr. Aguilar resigned from the QUEZON government (mahina utak ni Pres.Quezon)!!!
"The opposition continued, and shortly after the renaming of Wikang Pambansa as Pilipino, a query came from Hiligaynon Bisayan Congressman Inocencio Ferrer challenging the constitutionality of the choice of Tagalog as the basis of the national language ..."
Dr. Aguilar who is one of the few Philippine doctor in Pedagogy was RIGHT all along!

How would any decent domestic here and abroad take this uproar in their defence seriously? Lets look at reality here? How much are we paying our domestics locally? slave wages right? how much are the HK domestics being paid? In my opinion, these so called defenders are hypocrites. Can we honestly say we are treating our domestics better here than abroad? Can we clean up our backyards first before commenting on others’?
On being insensitive to other races? Have you ever been in an elevator with Filipinos and Indians? Almost always you’ll hear snickers from our Pinoys, as if its not obvious that they are poking fun at the unique aroma coming from some armpits, even daring to talk about it in tagalog for all to hear.
Observe a person with polio walking, almost always you’ll see/hear a fellow Filipino make fun of him.
Insecurities are for people with egos small enough for others to step on, thats where the childish tantrums or outcries come in handy. We can take the high road, shake it off, and work harder, work better, smarter, and quietly succeed…do a better job than anyone else to make way for fellow Filipinos…
If we listen to these pretenders/hypocrites, we’ll never mature, as someone pointed out we will always be “a nation of hecklers.”
Deeds count more than words…
Again, so much ignorance! The reason why Filipino should be promoted as a primary language nationwide is to strengthen our patriotism (ala Japan). Anyone with a brain can learn English as a second language. Its not a matter of sophistication in the language, its our maturity (or immaturity) that shows here...and why take mojo jojo seriously, he's in showbiz? we have to look at our showbiz people in the light of reality, they are there as an escape, to pretend, to play a role, to entertain - they must not be treated as our conscience...
Anon by Filipino do you mean Tagalog?
Well the Aguilar experiment indicated that children learned more effectively, and were better able to apply what they learned in schools in their homes and communities when the local “mother tongue” was used...So why prevent them from learning more?
Anon says "why take mojo jojo seriously"... Dude the guy studied in Harvard and UA&P.

CAN I JUST SAY, WHO IS THE IGNORANT ONE HERE?
AFTER READING THE ABOVE COMMENT, I WAS BESIDE MYSELF IN UTTER IRRITATION!
HAVING GROWN UP WITH JOE/MOJO, I CONSIDER MYSELF A GOOD FRIEND OF HIS AND HIS FAMILY'S. WE'VE FOLLOWED HIS CAREER AND ARE QUITE PROUD OF WHAT MOJO HAS ACCOMPLISHED, AND FOR SOMEONE TO PRECIPITOUSLY DEMEAN HIM JUST GETS MY GOAT!
JUST BECAUSE MOJO WORKS IN WHAT YOU CONSIDER "SHOW-BUSINESS" DOES THAT LIMIT THE VALIDITY OF HIS OPINONS? YES HE MAY BE A HOST ON RADIO AND TELEVISION, BUT HE DOESN'T PLAY A ROLE THAT IS UNFOUNDED OR ARTIFICIAL.
WHILE HOPEFULLY ENTERTAINING, IF YOU LISTEN/WATCH HIS PROGRAMS YOU WOULD SEE THAT HE DOES NOT BANTER FOR THE SAKE OF ENTERTAINMENT ALONE. IN FACT, HE MAKES IT A POINT TO INCLUDE A SOCIAL RELEVENCE IN WHAT HE DOES, WHETHER THROUGH DISCUSSION OF CURRENT EVENTS, POIGNANT SOCIAL ISSUES, AND TOPICS THAT ARE PERTINENT TO TODAY'S YOUTH.
MOJO DOES MORE THAN JUST ENTERTIAN... AMIDST THE SPATTERING OF JOKES AND ANECDOTES, HIS PROGRAMMING IS CHOCK-FULL OF INTELLIGENT COMMENTARY THAT IS DESIGNED TO STIMULATE THOUGHT AND BRING ABOUT ACTION IN THEIR AUDIENCE.
I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT JOE FULLY RECOGNIZES SUCH RESPONSIBILITY AS ACCORDED TO HIM THROUGH HIS LINE OF WORK - WORKING IN THE MEDIA IS A PRIVILEGE THAT HE DOESN'T TAKE FOR GRANTED. SO PLEASE, BEFORE YOU SPOUT HASTY BITING REMARKS LIKE THOSE ABOVE PLEASE TRY TO PONDER THE VALIDITY OF YOUR STATEMENTS.
WHILE THERE ARE CERTAIN "SHOWBIZ" PERSONALITIES THAT SHOULD NOT BE TREATED AS "OUR CONSCIENCES" PLEASE DO NOT MAKE SWEEPING GENERALIZATIONS AND CATEGORIZE ALL PUBLIC FIGURES AS SUCH.
AT THE RISK OF SOUNDING ARROGANT, I THINK MOJO DESERVES MORE CREDIT THAN WHAT YOUR JUDGEMENT ABOVE GIVES HIM. HOWEVER, JUST TO BANISH WHATEVER MISCONCEPTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT JOE AND HOPEFULLY BRING ABOUT AN END TO YOUR IGNORANT MINDSET, LET ME SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT...
MOJO IS A DEAR FRIEND AND AN ACCOMPLISHED INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS METICULOUSLY BUILT A CAREER ON SOCIAL ACTIVISM AND A SINCERE WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOCIETY... SO LET ME COME TO MY FRIEND'S DEFENSE:
MOJO IS PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR AWARDEE AND HAS BEEN EDUCATED AT TOP-NOTCH SCHOOLS; HE'S BEEN INVOLVED IN SOCI-CIVIC SERVICE EVEN BEFORE ENTERING "SHOWBIZ"; MOJO'S HELPED RAISE FUNDS FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS AMOUNTING TO MILLIONS OF PESOS; HE'S HELPED INSTITUTE FREE HIV TESTING IN OUR HOMETOWN; JOE ACTIVELY PETITIONED FOR GLBT RIGHTS AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS; JOE HAS HELD AN EDITORIAL POSITION FOR A HUMAN RIGHTS MAGAZINE AND A NATIONAL BROADSHEET AND CONTINUES TO WRITE FOR SEVERAL PUBLICATIONS, HE'S LECTURED AT SEVERAL COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ON TOPICS RANGING FROM MARKETING COMMUNICATION, ETHICS IN MEDIA AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY... AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT, MOJO CAN ALSO COOK A MEAN THANKSGIVING TURKEY AND MAKE STUFFING FROM SCRATCH!
SO MUCH FOR A MEASLEY "SHOWBIZ PERSONALITY" HUH?
SO ANONYMOUS, BEFORE YOU QUESTION A PERSON'S CREDIBILITY, PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH... LESS YOU WOULD RATHER LIKEN YOURSELF TO THOSE IGNORAMUSES YOU OBVIOUSLY DETEST.
GRAB A DICTIONARY AND LOOK UP THE TERMS "IGNORANT" "HYPOCRITE" "PREJUDICED" AND "ASSHOLE" - I'M SURE YOU'LL FIND YOUR PHOTO THERE.

I AGREE... do you think the Japs or even most of the population of HongKong can understand the english article of Chip Tsao?
Literacy in ENGLISH was curbed by Presidents Manuel Quezon! Now you blame the population for not understanding a articles written by snooty intellectual wanabes?
I work in China and have experienced varying degrees of discrimination, which I would attribute to my being a Filipino. The Chinese cleaners at the office are probably the worst. Little things that we often just shrug off. The fact that they work as cleaners means they're uneducated and do not know any better. I refuse to let them get the better of me. My best buddy is Chinese so not everyone is like that.
Literacy in ENGLISH was curbed by Presidents Manuel Quezon! Now you blame the population for not understanding articles written by snooty intellectual wanabes?
yup Quezon was not global kasi!
i can be racist and satirical as well... Tang Inang Mukha Yan Ang Pangit kasi mukhang insik beho!
the philippines is being represented by mrs. arroyo in the world stage. it must be gut wrenching for her to read this chinese man's piece. and to make it clear china's economic upturn is brought about by lots of U.S. manufacturing companies that moved their operations there bec. of greed and more profit. they love china's cheap labor. now someone is complaining about debt by the U.S. to the one whom the U.S. helped to be in that position of economic boom from where, again? hello! now it makes me think that some people are short sighted and do not know how to add up. america is still the biggest economy here on earth much to the envy of russia, china and the rest of the world. the only super power to boot the last time i look!
tama na, husto na. bayan ko itigil na. ano man ang mangyari, stupidity will always rule this world. gulong ng palad ang tawag diyan. e para naman nung unang panahon di natin pinaglalaruan at kinakawawa ang intsik sa pinas. naalala ko pa nung bata ako kung pano ko ipagkaila ang aking chinese lineage kasi lagi na lang sinasabi siguro ay ninuno mo dating yaya namin, o kaya pala me amoy bawang dito me instik sa tabi natin and other stupid things that only stupid people can say. once is enough, two is too much but three is insanity. e mas nakakahiya nga yung isang dapat responsableng pinuno ng bayang ito na nagsabing the chinese invented corruption. tama na yan, after all, i think most pinoys especially those who are DH don't mind the tag. ang mas mahalaga, me fud sa table. pride and honor won't feed gutom na bituka.
For satire to be effective, its execution and timing must be succinct and perfectly blended with just enough irony and humour to avoid direct insult.
unfortunately many people including myself took the Shit shao article as insulting. Remember the New Yorker cover of the Obamas as guntooting muslims? Well it fell flat and everyone were insulted.
yes even Obama complained about it.
understanding satire has got nothing to do with someone's level of education or literacy.
The onus is always on the writer or the cartoonist to deliver the goods so to speak.
De quiros is fantasizing the size of his literary capabilities.
I mean if you go to a comedy bar and theres 100 people, a comic makes a joke and 2 people laugh and the rest of us (98) is quite.
Would you consider that a success?
The answer would be a big FAT NO. A lousy joke by a lousy comic just like shit sow's satire.
AND ANOTHER thing, just because de quiross and Manuel apparently "got" the satire don't make them supernaturally supreme in intellect maybe they are just weirdos.

("The opposition continued, and shortly after the renaming of Wikang Pambansa as Pilipino, a query came from Hiligaynon Bisayan Congressman Inocencio Ferrer challenging the constitutionality of the choice of Tagalog as the basis of the national language ...")

Only Manolo is laughing!
korek!

Wow, great comments here on the entry!
I was asked a question in comments, or was it a statemen directed at me?
Either way, I was deeply troubled by its content.
Honestly, discrimination or racism against Filipinos boils my blood no matter where it happens. The fact that my beloved BF is Filipino is enough for me to scratch out eyes that belong to a racist. If you have a Filipino BF, you really do become very defensive if you hear even the slightest bit of ignorance with regards to the Filipino lexicon or ones pre conceived notions about Filipinos.
The fact that nearly my entire infrastructure is complied of Filipinos also makes me a fierce defender. I am a feverishly HOT supporter of the race generally.
I've said it a million times. I love Filipinos.
OK.
And I LOVE my yaya like a sister and continue to support her even from afar. I know a friend when I have a true one....
Domestic workers are the backbone.
In the country and out of it.
Vancouver is by all accounts the most dangerous place in Canada which is bad because I'm about to move there.. It is ALWAYS on the news here for this and that. Canada is a VERY multi cultural country in most regards. It is the reason why I love living here. It's quite the opposite to Australia in many ways although I remain fiercely protective of Australia because you have to grow up there to know the real deal. And things are changing there every single day since our new fantastic Labor Gov has come to power. Kevin Rudd is a friend to Asia and the Philippines. His policy shows that quite clearly. Not to mention he speaks/highly trained in dialects.. fluent Mandarin.
I will tell you one thing. I see hundreds of Filipinos here everyday when I ride the train and everywhere else for that matter.
My entire family here is Filipino.
I have young nephews ranging from 11-18 and they love Canada and they love their schools. One is training to be a Ballroom dancer and never gets teased.
Please keep in mind the Vancouver has a huge Chinese population and they take their racism with them when they leave their homeland. This is evident all around the world.
The Chinese are 'the snobs of Asia'.
And Vancouver has some crap high school gangs as well. It's a tough place by all accounts.
I have NO idea why Vancouver is this way. NEVER have I ever heard Filpinos being centered out here in Toronto for race crimes stats OR anything else. I just assume they are integrated fully because there are so many of them here. They just blend in with all the other wonderful colors of out Canadian society.I swear to you, the Filipino community in Toronto is wonderful and I have NOT heard of any racially motivated attacks or events involving Filipinos or aimed directly at Filipinos. They are by all accounts well blended within the larger picture of community. I for one hail the Filipino race for it's ability to migrate and incorporate itself with other races who can struggle much more with this transition ability.
But of course I will do some read up on this issue.
I'm not going to pound the drums about how I feel about the race.
I admire Filipino for many reasons.
I've tried to be fair and balanced throughout my journey.
One thing I know for sure, if few others have focused on the Philippines with as much passions and pleasure as I. The country will always have a really special place in my life.
Thank you for bringing this to the attention of both myself and the Victorina readership.

it makes me sad when people started reacting to negative criticism with another form of negativity like:
"how dare them insult *this* filipino? did they know he finished this degree in this school?"
intelligence nowadays is no more than going to school or finishing a degree. really sad. but such stereotype would change when they wold find out that the richest man in the world is a college drop out.
same with racism... filipinos are easily offended if other nationalities start degrading them but most filos are racists too. "bumbay", "intsik beho", or if you have a dark skin, tv people would hire you as a comedian instantly...
the world is so sad nowadays.
The truth, Filipinos are intelligent enough to know the diferrence betweeen a satire and to insult ridiculating someone, no need for a stupid De Quiros to explain the difference between the two.
The Phil. gov't is so useless, can't create jobs for the Filipinos. Instead, just contented that there are tsimay and tsimoy scattered all over the world. Now, worrying for the image? The gov't created that image years ago.
Sometimes, even fellow Filipinos who don't know me well can't believe that a portuguese, a venezuelan, a german and a spanish worked in my house as domestic helpers. Seems strange for them to believe a Filipina as the employer.
I have a problem with Conrado de Quiros' generalization about Filipinos abroad not being proud of their country. While I agree that there are indeed balikbayans who are loud and repulsive when they return to the Philippines, I think that the stereotyped image that de Quiros portrays of us is a sweeping generalization.
Proud to be Filipino, by Conrado de Quiros, PDI columnist (9 June 1998)
Most Filipinos, particularly abroad, feel no great compulsion to defend the country. Other than when a fellow Filipino is ganged up on, or when some macho response is needed. Many Filipinos do not even feel a compelling need to identify themselves as Filipinos. It is not a matter of pride, it is a matter of shame.
In my experience in Europe, most Filipinos have become more proud of themselves as Filipinos upon coming here. As a response to the culture shock upon arrival, plus the racist laws and popular prejudices that we find here, we have learned to fight for our place 'under the sun' - and we have learned to fight back whenever and wherever people try to put us down. True, with time we are able to blend ourselves into the host society: speaking the language, adapting the native customs, but we keep asserting our Filipino-ness in our friendship circle, in the food we eat, in the way we bring up our children, and in countless other ways. We have to - it's either that or succumb to the general anti-foreigner bias of our host countries.
Whenever I go home to the Philippines, I visit my family and friends, and go sightseeing, shopping, etc.. Most of the time, people don't recognize me or the rest of my immediate family as balikbayans. I know there are very many of us who are not obvious in their being balikbayan. For me this is natural - after years of people noticing us for being short, brown skinned, black haired, short nosed, etc..., in other words, being different from the rest of society, we find just blending into Philippine society a pleasant change. My daughter told me as much when I asked her what she liked about the Philippines: all of a sudden, she was just 'normal', 'ordinary', and she felt at home. I suppose that the most repulsive among the balikbayans tend to stand out in the crowd of ordinary returnees. But I think that those who tend to show off their balikbayan-ness could not immediately be labled as not being proud to be a Filipino - I think it is wrong, in principle, to judge one's patriotic pride by how they act immediately upon arrival. I know of one case of a young Filipina who was quite active in the preparation of the Philippine Centennial exhibit in the city she lived in, and who upon arrival in the Philippines was shocked by the heat, noise and the various inconveniences she found there. I would not be surprised if she made a complaint or two.
Or probably, put more simply, being Filipino is not being able to abide balikbayans. Frankly, I don't know a more insufferable group of people, a group that seems to have made a blood compact to bash the country at every turn.
The next time I go to the Philippines, I (and my family) would like to visit Mr de Quiros and show him how 'normal' balikbayans act. If he wants, I can refer him to all my friends who go home, so that he can have a more balanced sample of this group of people.
I am proud to be Filipino.
So are we, Mr de Quiros. We are six or seven million Filipinos abroad, and I am sure that the great majority of us are quite proud of being Filipino. We are proud not only of what we have in the Philippines, but also to what we have achieved abroad. After all, Filipinos have earned respect for our being hard working, for our close family ties, for our resourcefulness, warmth, flexibility. And we are also known for asserting our rights. Even the mail-order bride rackets have realized this and have learned to avoid sourcing in the Philippines. They say that: "The Filipina only LOOKS subservient." Filipinos often end up as leaders of unions in their host countries. We are no pushovers, and we are proud of this.
Mr. De Quiros, I was a nationalist activist when I left the Philippines in 1983. I know how it is to be proud of the Philippines and being a Filipino when I was still in the country. After 15 years abroad, I feel that I am prouder still, and that I know now (after having been exposed to other cultures) that I have much to be proud about. We are a beautiful nation, and we have admirable traits, and you can only really KNOW that when you have lived abroad. We have been giving the country a good image throughout the world for years, and we are proud of this.
I think that the biggest problem that would arise from this misconception is that it gives support to many laws and practices of the Philippine government that are anti-overseas Filipino. After all, why should these insufferable people be given the right to vote or representation? why allow them to own more than half a hectare of land? why waste precious government funds on consular budgets or overseas workers benefits? Why, indeed?
I appeal to Mr. de Quiros and all other well-meaning Filipinos in the Philippines to avoid bashing Filipinos abroad in the name of patriotism. I hope you would join us in our quest to make us all even prouder of being Filipinos.

Believe me, I like ridiculing people. One of the things I like best about living is to call people names and to insult them for the hell of it. Often, this ridicule is passed off as “satire,” “social criticism” and “commentary.” You can take any chump in the street and make a Conrado de Quiros out of him. Go read any tabloid, read the opinion columns, and you’ll see what I mean.
I think what made Malu Fernandez the almost-Antichrist of the Filipino blogosphere (although I wouldn’t take too lightly to that, because I have this deluded belief that I’m that almost-Antichrist) is her unrepentant dislike for OFW’s, her elitism, and for all intents and purposes, her weight. The way I see it, if you’re going to go about your business discriminating people, you might as well say it outright, disclose the fact that you’re a bigot, and we’re even. But if you do that very same thing and pass it off as “journalism,” “creative writing” or “satire,” or if you’re going to create this “character” as a venue to vent out your prejudice, I suggest you wrap razor wire around your neck, hang yourself on the tallest tree you can find, and do the “Du-du-du Da-da-da.”
I don’t think that it’s right to single out a Malu Fernandez, or a Tim Yap for that matter: I think that there’s enough razor wire and tall trees in the Philippines for us to have a mass execution to rid ourselves of journalistic ineptitude once and for all (let’s start with “investigative reporters”). The way I see it, there’s nothing wrong with being a prejudiced and discriminating bigot for so long as you admit to being one, and you do your prejudgment, discriminating and bigotry as what it is and not pass it off as an exercise in “journalism.”
This, I think, is the whole lesson in the Malu Fernandez controversy. There is room for all sorts of bigotry and prejudice in this world: nobody denies anyone a chance to laugh at a farting man who ate his fill of sarciadong kamote. We really can’t tie ourselves down to a frame of ethics that prevents us from mocking people, from discriminating, from drinking deep from the bottle of Hate-a-rade. But the least we expect from all of this discrimination, prejudice, bigotry, and hatred is honest disclosure.
I’m no rapper, but if you’re gonna have to hate a playa, the playa run game on ya, buck wild with the trigger. You know what, I heard that from somewhere…

Filipino domestic workers also have notions of equality with fellow Filipinos that are not class-based. They, for instance, feel that they are on equal footing with professional female Filipinos in Singapore despite the differences in occupational categories, mainly because they are all foreigners in a foreign land. They are insulted whenever professional Filipinos distance themselves from non-professionals so as not to be mistaken for domestic helpers. According to Sal, they have no right to look down on them because “lahat naman tayo katulong dito. Kami katulong sa bahay, sila sa kumpanya [Here we are all hired help; we serve in the house, they serve in companies].”
Perhaps instead of focusing on Tsao’s remark as an insult, let us use it to reflect on how exactly we treat our migrants. The structural factors are hard to change. I am not against out-migration, seeing it as a reality in a country with very little in terms of economic opportunities for people with a less-than-prominent educational background. But maybe we can do something in terms of how we treat those who leave, and those who return, whatever their occupation may be. Maybe in recognizing migration as a means, not to be servants to the world, but to better themselves and broaden their outlooks, we can avoid the pitfalls of constructing our own fellow Filipinos as slaves. Perhaps then the truth will hurt less.
"Filipinos, on the other hand, are generally seen as hard-working, uncomplaining people, who stay out of trouble, lead hard lives, but manage to stay pleasant and cheerful through it all. They usually integrate well—in part because of their English skills, but also because of their facility with other languages (there are 40,000 Filipinos in Milan, for example). They seldom live in ghettos, unlike many other immigrant groups. They have excellent social skills and these raise them in the esteem of indigenous populations.
In an article a few months ago about the same Art Bell e-mail, Conrado de Quiros notes that Filipinos in America are not perceived by marketing folk as a distinct ethnic group at all. While advertisers feel that if they are to reach, say, the Hispanic community, they need to add a specific Latino twist to their material, Filipinos are considered to be so integrated into the American mainstream that no specific ethnic elements are needed to reach them.
Even when Filipino communities abroad do become visible, as at Sunday afternoon gathering places in Hong Kong and Singapore, I wouldn’t say that other people look down on them. If anything, they admire the kabayan spirit that allows a new arrival immediately to join her or his language group. "
....It is true that Filipinos, and specifically Filipinas, experience prejudice and discrimination when they are abroad. In many countries they are exploited, violently treated, and even raped and killed. However, it seems to me that this is not so much because the perpetrators despise Filipinos per se; their often harsh treatment is usually because Filipinos abroad often have to start at the bottom of the ladder. They are exploited, along with foreign workers from other developing countries, because they constitute a large part of the international proletariat class that has grown so enormously over the past 20 years. The fact that so many countries are keen to employ Filipinos would seem to support the theory that Filipinos have a good international image compared with that of other immigrant populations.
TORN and FRAYED in MANILA
hay naku.
the bottom line is do not bite the hand that feeds you.
the fuckin' filipino economy is kept afloat by the OFW.
they work hard and endure bigotry day in and day out.
you in Manila try to be satirical while enjoying the fruits of their labor!
Give them poor ofw's a fuckin break. Be human for once de Quiros... One of these days you have to face God along with all the OFW's. I'm certain the OFW's have a higher stature in His kingdom!
in fairness to mlq the original and the 3rd, while mlq did pronounce pilipino as wikang pambansa back in the days of the commonwealth, it did not mean a change in the medium of instruction which was still english all the way to the early 1970s. in the 50s and 60s everyone still spoke great english because we were forbidden from speaking tagalog/pilipino in school, esp private schools, except during sariling wika classes. martial law na, 1973 i think, when marcos decreed a bilingual policy, that is, english and pilipino to be used in all schools. diyan nagsimulang magkalecheleche our english-speaking skills. not because it was a bad idea to teach some classes in pilipino/now-filipino but because there was no parallel effort to continue teaching and speaking in good english, among other things...
Tagalog is not Filipino !
PERIOD....
Well at least the column written by Conrad de Quiros proves that evolution is at work even on PDI columnists.
It was not so long ago that Conrad led the Lynch Mobs against "traitorous" OFWs--calling them "Toilet Bowl Cleaners of the World." At least now he thinks it is okay to be a Servant even in a foreign land.
After all, if you were a servant, would you not be proud to come from a "Nation of Servants"?
Seems to me Filipino Servants are much better off, on average, in Hong Kong than they are in Philippines at the hands of some Filipinos.
Though of course, after this episode, I daresay the Lynch Mobs have probably created a lot of trouble for those Filipino servants.
I'm sure CONRADO will find this the true satirical, ironical and cruel footnote on us...
A Filipino couple was deported from Japan on Monday, leaving their 13-year-old daughter behind in an immigration row that has drawn wide public sympathy for the family.
Arlan Cruz Calderon, 36, and his wife, Sarah, 38, left Tokyo's Narita airport for the Philippines, seen off by their daughter, Noriko, and a crowd of reporters, said public broadcaster NHK.
The couple was forced to leave because they entered the country on false passports in the early 1990s, but they had pleaded to be allowed to stay so their Japan-born daughter could finish her schooling in the country.
The government has allowed the daughter, who speaks only Japanese, to stay on humanitarian grounds but warned the family several weeks ago it would deport all three unless the parents agreed to leave voluntarily.
“I feel sad,” Noriko earlier told reporters at their home in Warabi, north of Tokyo.
“I won't have delicious food made by my mother any more. I feel full of uncertainty,” she said.
Noriko will stay in Japan in the care of a relative of her father.
The case has drawn intense media coverage in Japan, and more than 20,000 people signed a petition asking the government to allow all three to stay.
The case has also attracted the attention of Amnesty International as well as the UN Human Rights Council, which has asked Japan for information about it.
But Justice Minister Eisuke Mori, who is in charge of immigration matters, has said the government had done its utmost to help the family.
Anon says "why take mojo jojo seriously"... Dude the guy studied in Harvard and UA&P.

anon what do you have against Mojo?
He is a nice, humble, hard working GAY guy. His parents work hard in the U.S. and he is proud of them!
Isa pa 'tong out of touch intellectual si De Quiros. Just read his column -- it has been a trance-like monologue of late to the altar of the "bleeding heart" of de Quiros -- such self-absorption and emotionalism that are sapping his well-founded views.
OR maybe he's not that a good writer. As for satire, de Quiros can't write satire, even if he tries to very hard -- which is a gas that he wants to be embrace the infallibility that supposedly journalists are immune from and wants to be brother-brother to Tsip Tsao.
Compare to de Quiros to the late journalist and writer Adrian Cristobal who was a master at satire and irony -- funny and erudite, without being offensive.
Ever heard of the phrase "mukhang maid." This usually comes from the middle class when they want to snub a brown-skinned, pango nose Filipino. And yet i wonder why Filipinos don't get angry and beat up these minority tisoys? (No satire intended)
oi idol ko si conrado de quiros because he has a very big long hair!!
hahaha
P.S. we are all acists
Was it not Conrado de Quiros who wrote that the Filipinos are the TOILET BOWL CLEANERS of the world?
its really saddend me everytime i hear this kind of stories.
the last time i was in macau, ive been in one of the casino's there, and really shocks me when i saw a couple of pinoys having their bags at ang nakakagulay ipinaglalalagay nila sa mga bag nila yung mga libreng miniral waters and even heard from one of my friend na dun na rin sila kumakain ng libre(my mga complimentary foods and drinks sila dun)at lalo pa kong nanlumo nung my makita akong pinoy couple na nagkakalkal ng basura namumulot ng kung anu(sabi uli ng friend ko mga lottery coupons daw yung pinupulot at my siniswerte namang makakuha ng jackpot) nakakalungkot isipin at talagang di madali maging ofw lalo pa yung mga talagang struggling sa ibang bansa para lang my maipakain sa pamilya back home at lalo lang nakakasakit ng damdamin kapag nakadinig o nakabasa kapa ng mga panlalait.
minsan iisipin mo bakit kailangang magkaganun?dimo masisisi di naman nila sayo hinihingi ang kinakain nila at e ano kung mamulot at magkalkal ng basura?bibigyan ba nila yung tao?
sometimes we cant call them an ignorant, nangiinsulto nalang at namamahiya masaya sila ng ganun.
Hey Victorina. Till we understand Chip Tsao's article as a satire not against the Filipino but against the Chinese who bully Filipinos, then we continue to be illiterate. Read Chip Tsao again, read CDQ and MLQ again. They are right and we were all wrong.
The remark “Yeah, you're so pretty! I wish my folks could hire YOU to make my bed every morning” is only degrading to us class-conscious Filipinos who look down at maids and think being called a maid is an insult. It was a sexist not a racist remark, IMHO.
illiterate nationalist the comment “Yeah, you're so pretty! I wish my folks could hire YOU to make my bed every morning” is BOTH SEXIST and RACIST.
Can't you read?
Maybe you came from the same school as MLQ and CDQ!
The school for UNDERGRADUATES!
I agree!
It's both sexist and racist. Its like seeing an Indian in Manila and asking him if he is a loan shark.
Mensa, just because I don't agree with you, you think you're entitled to disrespect and insult others. I called myself illiterate, 'di ba nga? Calling me an undergraduate: thanks for providing the classic example of "classism" in the Philippines. What school taught you those values? You look down at people who have not graduated? Being an undergraduate is an insult? How do you look at maids, drivers, etc? But I don't expect you to come down from your high horse and accept you may be wrong, mate.
Anonymous, loan shark is definitely derogatory. Maid is not necessarily. Calling Filipinas maids is stereotyping but not necessarily a bad word. It is to us because it has brought us to a lower class. Don't people say "pang-chimay" "mukhang atsay?" as negative comments? Aren't we classists? Wasn't it us who made it a derogatory word and so when we are called one we feel insulted?
Only those who can be objective and mature and detach from their sensitivity and emotions can see a point different from theirs, the point I made and CDQ and MLQIII made.
The comments here use racial slander against those who insult Filipinos. Why isn't anyone here objecting to that? Does that make it right? Here is where vox populi does not work.
I do not have the monopoly of truth or perfect grammar. I am proposing an opposing view and being a devil's advocate. Peace!
@Illiterate Nationalist April 17, 2009 2:22 AM,
“Yeah, you're so pretty! I wish my folks could hire YOU to make my bed every morning”
This is what you call a pick-up. A pathetic pick-up line. Why can't he hire "her" himself in the first place?
Answer: the dude is penniless or butt ugly and using his "folks" reel or real wealth to impress a girl. lols
Anon I think Mensa was being satirical since it is a known fact that neither CDQ or MLQIII ever graduate college!
peace also...
I think I've seen enough comments here regarding the Tsao brouhaha and the Good Times gang's experiences in China for me not to add anything.
About De Quiros though, I liked his predecessor much better, Larry Henares of "Make My Day" fame. Larry was never condescending and boring.

dude, that goes to show how illiterate you are. It's actually the other way around. America owes China billions of dollars in debt.. at one point, it even reached trillions! get your facts straight!
thank you for posting! i learned something.
I will get slaughtered for this but whatever.
This is one of the reasons why I do not like China! what baffles me though is how Filipinos (from the Philippines) can hold them up with such high regard when they think so lowly of us??
Just my thought on the subject.
Cheers
