Media critics are almost in consensus that media failed in its coverage of the death of the wife of Ted Failon, one of media’s most popular figures, and the accompanying police investigation. Prof. Luis Teodoro, former dean of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication, agreed. “It was a bit overdone especially on the part of ABS-CBN. There were stories that were repeated.”
Not so long ago, the death of actor Rico Yan brought forth a superfluous national outpour of grief propelled by television. Yan’s home station never made any investigation to the real cause of the actor’s death. In its aftermath, print-media took stock to the hype and became critical of ABS-CBN.
Similarly, ABS-CBN displayed the same unusual diligence in chronicling the Failon tragedy. Neither police nor ABS-CBN were able to show any kind of professional detachment in the case,” Vergel Santos said. He added that there was too much focus on Failon when the focus should have been more on his wife, Trina.
Maybe we have to identify key elements that influence the news treatment here:
1. ABS-CBN, a giant multimedia company, has a history of being a media bully and fierce in protecting its interests. Just last week, I saw Julius Babao act like Judge Dredd and use his ABS-CBN cameras to torment and bully a SUSPECTED adulterer in the TV show XXX.
2. Ted Failon has signified intentions of running for the Senate, and thus the news has subtle political colors to it. The fact that journalists turned politicos may raise eyebrows when it comes to ethics and professionalism.
3. ABS-CBN and other media seemed to connect the hasty and messy investigation to that – hinting that the police used the death of Failon’s wife to get back at the broadcaster.
4. The family’s behavior during and after the apparent suicide of Trina Etong were grounds for further suspicion, including the clean-up, the media interviews.
5. Our police are not really known to be efficient in crime investigation, how much more in forensic science. Our public has been sharpened by watching CSI episodes, they know what efficient police work should be.
Given all this, it is understandable that the news becomes a media circus. But it is also time for media to do some introspection and assess its role and responsibilities to the public when it comes to reporting facts.
In its handling and treatment of the Ted Failon – Trina Etong news story, ABS-CBN did not act like a responsible news media, it is acting like a godfather protecting its favorite son.
For that, Victorina joined the people in saying:
ABS-CBN FAILED again!
sorry aside since picture ni korina ang bumulaga sa akin. mar will never be president of the phils with korina as his wife. yuck!
HOW dare Julius Ma Babaw inflict that kind of terror on a alleged womanizer when JULIUS is the KING of extra marital affairs.
Such IRONY. Such PARADOX.
The kettle calling the kawali BLACK.
ABS=CBN is the KING of denial and spin-doctoring.
1) Rico Yan died of a drug overdose. ECSTASY while Marvin and Dominique watched in horror.
2) The Tantoco scion died of BAD DRUGS given by DJ Montano, as he writhed and foamed in the mouth on the couch of Celine Lopez.
3) The WOWOWEE death toll, now reputedly caused by scalpers who charged P 1,000 pesos to those who wanted to get in first.
4) TED Failon whitewashed, proclaimed guiltless by could be PURSE LADY Korina Sanchez.
And THEY think they can ram this down our throats.
THINK AGAIN Charo and Gabby, your days are SO NUMBERED.
KARMA and HUBRIS are at your front door.
IT WILL EXACT it's pound of flesh.
As we, your target audience cheer and applaud.
i'm sorry, but i just cannot understand the need to cover this issue on national TV for 2 weeks... she committed an alleged suicide, fine, its hard for her family, its hard for everyone to see a life lost.. yet, if if this happened to any other family, this issue would not be a big deal.. it would have been more respectful for the bereft if abs-cbn just covered the story once or twice on the nightly news... its just over-bearing and sickening to hear the same conclusions over and over again...
but indeed abs-cbn failed miserably, they went over board... and our news have always been selective, albeit filtered... as ambrose bierce said about history...
"HISTORY is an account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers mostly knaves, and soldiers mostly fools"
"The Gucci Gang deliberately flexed its muscle by writing and somewhat capitalizing on the sudden death of their dearly departed friend"
Dam right the GG did! And Celine Lopez led the ravenous pack directly to his still warm carcass! And why not? She is the most guilty of them all. Several feet of ink devoted to the drug fueled memories...
I agree to you sir.But is it only ABS-CBN who is to blame for its sensational coverage of the case ? In my opinion, the whole news media (which is controlled by the corporations)are also guilty for its overdoed story of the Trina Etong case. What do you think ?
I clearly agree to this.. when did abscbn became responsible? all they care about is profit. one reason why i dont watch so much news these days. some of them are fabricated to their interest. and Julius babao's action in xxx also shows how they are abusing thier power. thnks for pointing this out to the public.
Oh yes, they failed!
So now, they turn the public's attention to another one of their own in the hope of erasing the memory of how they bungled the Ted issue. I'm talking about the Mar-Korina engagement. Now, I can't/won't comment on the emotions displayed there...nothing wrong with seeing a couple showing love for one another...but the fact that it was done on Wawawillie's show (where the masses gather to eat this all up) told me that ABS set the stage for a "grand event". No need to imply the political implications of this event either. Again, I have no comment on Mar-Korina (except to say congrats)...but ABS is manipulative, ruthless, and downright self-serving.
Forget the staff, the news division, the (ugh!) talents, the lower executives, and some of the high ones at the network. It all points to a handful at the top of the pyramid.
I disagree with "1) Rico Yan died of a drug overdose. ECSTASY while Marvin and Dominique watched in horror."
They took ecstacy together that's why nawalan ng career si Dominic and Marvin went to channel 7!

Strong words, but how do you expect this to happen? Blogging? Ha! Don't make me laugh! The only way this can be achieved is for everyone to simply stop watching the network. Seriously, can this be done? I think you know the crystal-clear answer, hahaha.....Remember, they have ALL the tools to turn things around and end-up being the ones saying "POW!" to us. Perhaps someone can advise us on how the high and mighty can fall, because I don't think blogging alone will do the trick. Not for one bit!Sorry!
Another alternative I can think of would be to go back to 1972, but who the f**k would want that?

Oh, really? Are you old enough to remember what it's like to live under Martial Law? Well, I AM...and let me tell you what a dumb and ignorant comment that was. It's this kind of mindset that brings us down.
Btw, it's not the talents who rule the country, kid. I feel sorry for you if you really believe that...and judging people by their educational background is wrong...totally wrong. Many of you here are guilty of the same thing. A f**kin' diploma doesn't guarantee anyone a level of acheivement and/or success. Not in this country. Ask Erap!
I sincerely share your disdain for ABS, but please don't bring that illogical shit to the table.

What's new with this station?! They'll do anything and everything for their own benefit.
What's in the next list of this station? after acting like a godfather on TED and the attempt to get pacquiao in any means, on their so called kapamilya network!
I believe that God is working and will find the answer soon...
Lopezes, be ready, for not all the days are your days....
i am still of the opinion that trina committed suicide. got to wait for the findings of the nbi. but on its media coverage, i relied more on the editorials, opinion pages of the two most popular philippine newspapers: the inquirer and philstar. add also the daily tribune. are the columnists of these newspapers biased too? in all my readings there was a tendency toward the inculpability of ted failon and family. but there was a resounding universal agreement that the pnp bungled its invistigation and its brutality in treating the suspects including ted failon. i may be naive to say that it was but proper that abs-cbn came all out in its support to ted. he is an employee of the company. it would not feel right if abs-cbn did not come to defend one of its brightest talents. moreover, tv coverage of other channels and printed news accounts were also wantonly inaccurate. there was supposed to be scratches/bruises in ted's face/body. if only a mug shot of ted had been printed for all the world to see, suspicions about his committing the crime would have made immediate impact.the police had all the opportunity to take that shot as ted was brought to the police station on the very day the crime was committed. by the way, mug shots of celebrities here in america accused of drunken driving and other crimes is the first thing you see in the papers. pictures tell a thousand words.
Corina d' Cannibal- Senator Manuel 'Mar' Roxas II cried during the popular noontime show "Wowowee" after his fiancee, ABS-CBN chief correspondent, Korina Sanchez, expressed her love for him on Saturday.
Roxas told Wowowee host Willie Revillame it was Sanchez who made him stop wanting to be a bachelor.
"Siya yung nagpatigil sa pagkaka-binata ko," Roxas said.
Sanchez, who was wearing her engagement ring, said she never thought she would meet the man in her life.
"Kala ko kasi, Willie, hindi na ito darating sa buhay ko e....Gusto ko lang sabihin kay Mar na, kahapon, ngayon, at bukas, iyong iyo ako," she said.
Roxas also described to Willie how he proposed to Sanchez.
"Siyempre magakatabi kami, kami lang, nag hoholding hands, at sinabi ko naman sa kaniya na, 'Honey, alam mo naman siguro na tayo na nga talaga ito, kaya, I want to formally ask your hand in marriage," Roxas said, after which he shed tears.
Sanchez then wiped away the tears on Roxas' face with her finger.
After Willie expressed surprise at Roxas' emotional response, Roxas said: "Na touch [kasi] ako sa sinabi niya e."
YUCK!
Impact on 2010
A Roxas campaign strategist admitted that should Sanchez and Roxas decide to take their high-profile relationship to the next level, this would boost Roxas's campaign for presidency in 2010...
"Wala pa, abangan niyo nalang. Kayo ang unang makakaalam," Sanchez said.

WTF's the matter with you people? Martial Law is about many of your personal rights being taken away (among other things) REGARDLESS of who's in charge...but I guess you'd NEVER, EVER understand that.
So you say a repeat of 1972 can work, huh? Yeah, right buddy...and that also will eradicate celebrities, hmmm?....Now you're making me laugh.
Grrr...'eto nanaman yung mga pa-God-God diyan. Hoy, pwede ba? Iwanan mo nalang ang usapan na yan sa ibang forum.
Pang-asar ka lang dito...lalo na yung username mo! Buwisit!
Carlitoz I don't think Amiel is talking about suicide... the topic is media ethics- as in should Corina do a 5 hour radio campaign about her partner Ted?
FUCK CELEBRITY POLITICIANS!
so the failure of ABS is simply this:
that they have been "repeating" stories re the suicide?
i don't get it. whats wrong with that, ethics-wise?
what did they do wrong exactly?
Cannibal or not of grief, that's what media and marketing is for.
Shoulders shrugging...It must be Gucci Gang and Tim Yap working again.
JOEL TANTOCO by TIM YAP
from the Inquirer
"and the indulgent character Joel is, I’m sure he’s enjoying his time up there.
God is the DJ and Joel is his ledge dancer.
Right now I am having my private conversation with Joel and far away from Joel in spirit -- we’ll always have that bond between us...
“Life is short so let’s live it” has always been Joel’s mantra.
Jojo Binay is a pawn of Gucci Gang and Celine Lopez- that's why they were able to have Gorrell arrested. The newspaper accounts had it that he died at a friend's apartment, was discovered by a security guard and that his death was from 'natural causes'... this according to Jejomar Binay.
How many sleeping deaths occur outside of one's own house? How many deaths in exclusive apartments are 'discovered' by security guards?
How many deaths are proclaimed 'of natural causes' by the MAYOR?
WHAT MONEY CAN DO!
IF FAILON WERE AS RICH AS JOEL T. SANA HE COULD HAVE WHITE-WASHED THE DEATH!
"Police were called in to investigate Tantoco's death but Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, a friend of the family, said the grandson of patriarch Bienvenido Tantoco had died of natural causes.
"It was a natural death. There was no foul play," Binay said when the Philippine Daily Inquirer caught up with him as he walked out of the scene of the incident.
Even Binay's guards were barred from entering the Regina Building on Aguirre Street in Legaspi Village, where Tantoco was found dead around 7 a.m.
Investigators refused to give information about the death except that a security guard found Tantoco already dead on a sofa inside a condominium and that he had no external injuries.
Scene of the Crime Operatives were also sent to Tantoco's unit to investigate the death, but none of them spoke when asked what they had gathered after processing the incident scene."
How can we understand "high society" deaths when media can white wash them easily!
My instincts tell me Rico Yan died of ecstasy overdose but ABS-CBN made a SUPER COVER-UP story and made the boy look like a SAINT!
fuck ABS-CBN! sinungaling!

Rico just turned 27 last March 14. The apparent cause of his death was cardiac arrest following a rupture of the pancreas, more commonly known as bangungot???Two people who were with Rico on his last night on Earth were co-star Dominic Ochoa and Janna Victoria. According to Dominic, the group attended a party the night before and they went back to their cottage at around 2 am. Friday. The five friends slept together in one big room at the second floor of a cottage, with Rico occupying the loft because he was a snorer. At around 6 am., Rico was heard groaning but his companions dismissed it as mere snoring. When Dominic tried to wake Rico up at around 9:40 am., he found him stiff in his pajamas, lifeless. They were to go to the nearby Snake Island.
Amiel,
Stop being a cry baby... If you don't like ABS-CBN don't watch their shows, period!
Roces accused General Aglipay of "manipulating" Yan’s autopsy report to make it appear that he died of acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis or bangungot to keep the drug angle away from public scrutiny.
"Bakit hindi ipakita kung may nagawa rin siyang kamalian upang hindi na tularan ng ibang kabataan?" Roces asked. "Hindi naman santo at banal si Rico Yan."
Roces lambasted those who tried to picture Yan as a saint. "Bakit kasi pulos ang kabaitan at kabutihan ni Rico Yan lamang ang inilalabas sa publiko?" she asked her viewers. Roces claimed she was told by a reliable source that actor Dominic Ochoa, who was one of Yan’s companions at Dos Palmas resort in Palawan when the actor died, bought 12 tablets of the designer drug Ecstasy, in Cubao, Quezon City before they left for a vacation.
Roces explained that one of the side effects of Ecstasy is for users to say "I Love You" to other persons, even if they don’t know them personally. She said she experienced the same attitude when she "tested" the drug in the past.
Prior to his death, Roces quoting sources, said, Yan greeted several people in the resort "I Love You" while singing.
"Bakit kasi hindi ilabas ang tunay na resulta ng autopsy kay Rico Yan? Kasi naman may uncle siyang maimpluwensyal," said Roces.
In a radio interview, Aglipay vehemently denied manipulating the result of Yan’s autopsy report.
Aglipay stressed that they waited for doctors and experts to be around before opening the body bag containing Yan’s remains for autopsy.
Yan died March 29 and his body was flown late in the afternoon to Manila on board an ABS-CBN plane. Yan was buried at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City last Thursday.
Earlier, Ochoa also denied reports that Yan died of Ecstasy overdose. In the same radio interview, Ochoa said he is also planning to file charges against Roces for dragging his name into the controversy.

Years ago, a young actor, who was a symbol of youth and good behavior, died of drug overdose.
The public was told that he died of a natural cause.
But people who knew said the actor died after taking one too many Ecstasy pills.
That evening before he died in his sleep, the actor was observed acting like he couldn’t control his sexual longing.
One of the effects of Ecstasy is enhanced sexual desire.
Ecstasy use is becoming widespread among the rich and famous. Its use is allegedly common among some habitués at posh nightspots.
I hope that a Cabinet member who gave away Ecstasy pills to prostitutes before having orgies with his friends in his yacht has stopped the practice.
I learned about this Cabinet man’s bad behavior from some prostitutes who had “serviced” him and his friends.
Weh!
Here's my observation the last time I was in Manila (which was 3 days ago). The news is so localized... all about nahuli ng pulis... nabugbog ng mga tao sa kanto... nagtangkang magpakamatay... nahuling nagnakaw... oh, and not to forget, the Trina Etong case that received full (and almost exclusive) coverage by ABS-CBN. All so colorful and sensational. But are they important news that people need to know in order to improve their lives? International news was SO LACKING. No wonder the Pinoys know so little of the world. Pinoys are so detached from the reality of its own status. Media should educate the people but instead ABS-CBN milked the cow. They capitalized on Pinoys penchant for chismis. And yes, chismis is so interesting di ba while world events are boring. And what happens, the Pinoys stuck on TV, glued on Channel 2, waiting for the next interesting chismis. Kaya di alam ng Pinoy how much huling-huli na siya sa mundo and how badly he needs to change. But ABS-CBN sure knows they gained profits.
Anyway, touching on the Trina Etong case, I was so appalled by ABS-CBN's repeated broadcasting of Ms. Etong's best friends' declaration that the late Ms. Etong really wanted to commit suicide... "gusto niya talagang magpakamatay and she was only waiting for her daughter's graduation to finish". That was on TV... over and over again. I was like "Huh!?" Nahilo ako. I could not get the logic behind such declaration except ABS-CBN's aim at clearing Mr. Ted Failon of the public's doubt. But I still cannot understand that. Ang nakita ko lang is that the best friends knew what Ms. Etong is planning and still they let her do it.
So now I am back in Hong Kong... and here I learned that there is a deadly virus in Mexico called Swine Flu that already killed 81 people in their country. 20 cases are now reported in USA, a few in Netherlands, France and China. This is scary. I hope ABS-CBS has reported this in the Philippines.

I am totally disgusted of how ABS CBN people try to put another picture on the arrest. I understand how they are saving their face. A leading news figure like Ted Failon being accused of murder of his own wife would be somewhat humiliating to the whole news team as well. I understand how they could not bear to have a fact that someone who was presumed as murderer was one of their pillars in news presentation. I understand how they will lose their reputation.
Now, this will show how ABS CBN are really that biased in presenting their news. THey are not serving the public for information. They are serving themselves for their own interest.
I think the media along with the Police are missing a very important question here.....
Did the Failon's have a butler?
-PETES
_people for the ethical treatment of Etongs
this was a test case for all media outfits and i have to say, they, especially broadcast media, failed in varying degrees.
i think abs-cbn, generally speaking (with the sole exception of korina sanchez), didn't whitewash the whole thing and tried to make it appear that ted failon was guiltless. if anything, they were the ones who first reported on tv patrol that an unnamed police source told them that ted failon shot his wife during an altercation inside a car. of course, it turned out that that never happened which makes you wonder why a police investigating the case would say an outright lie. this false story largely fueled the speculation that ted failon killed his wife.
ted failon being who he is, it is expected that certain powerful individuals would try to help him or bring him down. and regardless of the true cause of trina etong's death, the drawn out and at times sensationalized coverage was inevitable since her husband happened to be a popular figure.
tv is a business and in this business, it is all about the ratings. unfortunately, a tragic loss was turned into a public spectacle for the sake of the bottomline.
as for news being local, in prime time news there might be a dearth of international news since it is obviously centered on news happening in the metro and around the country, but you can get your world news fix on anc, cnn or bbc.let's face it, the sad fact is, the average pinoy probably won't care what's happening on the other side of the world let alone worry too much about what's happening in our country when they have something far more important to worry about -- putting food on the table.
abs-cbn reported, albeit it seemed in a biased manner, about trina's best friends' declaring that she indeed killed herself. they probably were indignant that ted failon was being blamed for his wife's death without due cause and with the investigation still going on.
dominique, hindsight is 20/20. did you watch the part of the interview where they thought that their friend was just joking? obviously they didn't know that even when someone is just cracking a joke about killing one's self, it is to be taken seriously since that person has evidently thought of suicide.
it is easy to demonize abs-cbn for obvious as well as even for petty reasons. all i observed is how the police bungled the case and how the media turned it into a circus.
agree totally that " was so appalled by ABS-CBN's repeated broadcasting of Ms. Etong's best friends' declaration that the late Ms. Etong really wanted to commit suicide..."

anon 10:00 AM, to connect the statement:
Do you actually see a left handed person, shoot her or his own self on the right temple, to end her/his life?
with a quote from "The Little Prince"
is MISLEADING.
The famous quote from The Little Prince is:
"What is essential is invisible to the eye. Only with the heart that one sees clearly."
From, http://www.cjvlang.com/petitprince/foxsecret/heartseee.html
'Can see clearly' indicates an ability or capability to see, at the same time suggesting a SUBJECTIVE element of purpose, intention, or desire.
A person ending his/her life, by shooting himself or herself, will do it the fastest and easiest way he/she can. Not by twisting his/her arm, to UNNATURALLY shoot himself/herself, on the right temple, when he/she is left-handed.
The obvious, will not be seen, by those whose SUBJECTIVITY clouds their OBJECTIVE eyes.
In investigations of violent deaths, what is ESSENTIAL is the TRUTH. The TRUTH is not invisible to the eyes, if you just open your OBJECTIVE eyes. If your heart rules your head, then SUBJECTIVITY reigns supreme.
If you love someone, they can do no wrong. Read what the fiancee of a Boston medical student, who is now charged with murder :
'the medical student's fiancee launched a passionate defence of her soon-to-be husband.'
In an email to ABC television, Megan McAllister said Philip Markoff 'could not hurt a fly'.

To Jonathan Cerillo:
The same comment you gave to Amiel should also apply to you, if you don't like this blog, don't view it & SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP. We don't want your useless crap. You just take up space.
To Gabby D:
ABS-CBN fails because they have successfully diverted the attention of the viewing public from the alleged crime and suspects to the police. Actually most media outlets failed in that aspect. With regards to news, ABS-CBN is notorious for distorting the facts, or downplaying them. Remember that they are a family-owned corporation, and as such will always have vested interests.
I thought Maria Ressa could clean up the mess that is the ABS-CBN news department. Guess I thought wrong.
That's why I don't watch the local news and TV shows anymore, local TV has gone to the dogs the day they started to emphasize news personalities over the news itself.
Failed? Have you seen the bottomline? Can you afford what they can? tsk, tsk, tsk, those whi have not - envy...
