A comment made in an earlier post in DV made me reassesses the direction of Victorina ;
“Why do (comments) always disappear when no pop culture personality is mentioned?"
Indeed there has been too much worthless tumult over the ongoing ruckus on the Internet’s Kho-Halili sex video. While the comment made does carry much credence, it fails to co
nsider that scandals have customarily served as precursors to eminent societal upheavals.
Sex sells!
Senator Jinggoy Estrada and Senator Bong Revilla know this very well (only 3 “media hungry” Senators were present) - this is why they wanted media to join the hearing on the sex-scandal in aide of legislation. After rouge ex-policeman Abner Afuang threw water on Hayden, the Senate hearing chaired by Sen. Jamby Madrigal began to look like a sequel of "Dumb and Dumber".
There is a very inquisitive analysis made by Manila Times columnist Mao Samonte on this topic; “from 1969, to 1979, up to 1989, crises in politics and in the economy have been preceded by a marked rise in sex movies, a rise that each time is characterized by a name distinguishing it from the others. The Aquino administration was marked by several deadly coup attempts and the unstable nature of the country was reflected in the film industry. Director Chito Rono tried to make sense of the brouhaha and made the movie “Curacha; Ang Babaing Walang Pahinga.” Curacha was portrayed by no less than Victorina’s avid supporter, the ever FLAWLESS Rosana “Osang” Roces.
As Curacha, Osang goes through the underbelly of life; first having sex with a General that would later decide the fate of our country. She tries to numb herself with drugs, she proceeds dazedly and the film rather meanders until reaching a dead end. This blockbuster movie received an X-rating from the MTRCB.
According to Mao Gia Samonte; the efflorescence of sex genre in Philippine cinema continued well into the 80s, continually giving rise to new screen seductresses. Stella Strada made Kirot in the year Ninoy Aquino was assassinated. The dramatics started with Dr. Kho getting doused with water before the hearing.
Then Katrina, in her statement, portrayed herself as a victim of love betrayed.
Bong Revilla, for his part, swaggered and asked rather dramatically, "Ano ngayon ang nararamdaman mo ngayon at kaharap mo si Katrina? Anak ng teteng!"

Sex is everywhere on the internet and at your nearest unauthorized dvd retailer. I don't see how a sex resurgence in Philippine movies can save the industry when people have better and cheaper choices.
I'm currently listening to mediamen on the radio saying that this Kho hearing is "sidetracking" us from issues that are more important like the Lakas/Kampi merger, etc. I couldn't agree more. Do we have to wait for the names of people behind the drug syndicates? Believe me, we won't hear it.
In the meantime, I hope Amiel's reassessment will result in a better DV.

A tabloid reporter Abner Afuang poured water on Hayden Kho’s head right in the middle of the packed Senate hearing on the Hayden-Katrina sex video a little before 4 p.m. today, causing chaos and leading to the reporter’s arrest.
The incident caused Hayden’s lawyer, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, to protest to hearing chair Sen. Jamby Madrigal, saying, “How can you justify this desecration of the rights of this private individual?”

PDEA on Tuesday issued subpoenas for the two celebrities, now at the center of a sex video scandal, following allegations of the doctor's mother that Halili had prodded her son to take drugs during an intimate act between the two.
Also invited for investigation on May 29 was Kho's mother Irene, who made damning allegations against the actress in a television interview Monday night.
“There is already a probe team ... We have issued subpoenas for them to shed light on the narration [that they used drugs],” said Major Val Lopez, chief of the PDEA Complaint and Reaction Unit.

PDEA INVESTIGATION STARTS NOW!
PDEA director general Dionisio Santiago said the investigation would start with Kho's mother, Irene, who accused Halili introducing her son to drugs.
“The investigation will start with the mother who claimed on television that her son gets illegal drugs from Katrina who, in turn, gets the supply from a certain Omar," Santiago said in a statement released Tuesday.
The hearing is set on May 29 at 1:30 p.m.
Santiago said they have been receiving reports about the use of illegal drugs in the showbiz industry but lacked enough proof to substantiate the claims.
“We have been waiting for the perfect moment to validate this information. This incident with Katrina and Kho provided us with the opportunity to finally step in and probe the extent of illegal drug use in show business," Santiago said.
He added that their probe would not stop with Halili and Hayden.
“We want to get to the source who supplies them with illegal drugs. We expect to uncover the trails. We will get to the bottom of this," Santiago said. -

Madrigal and Estrada tried to get Kho to say who was the dealer of the drugs.
Kho refused.
He said he had received threats and that he could “not compromise the safety” of his family.“This guy really has a lot of connections. I’d rather not comment at this point,” he repeatedly told the senators, who asked if he could tell all in an executive session.Kho said the senators would just end up being removed from the Senate, but that the life of his family would be put in danger.

Senator Revilla should not take all the blunder for defending Katrina Halili. First and foremost, he is a movie actor and was former chair of the senate committee on public information and mass media. I don't share the view that this issue is not any less important than other national matters.
The only reason that this sex scandal was a most talked about topic is the way the people and media have reacted towards it. The senator’s background check isn't the issue either so why make it a part of the hassle?
We call our senators "sawsaw" when we like making "sawsaw" other issues into the main issue.

right on AMIEL! Our preoccupation with the sex scandal is a symptom of our national woe—our inability to do what is essential and important. We escape reality and delve into the woes of others to compensate for our pettiness. It is tsismis or rumor-mongering at our national best. What is so crucial about the sex lives that it crowds out the little, dying voices that ought to be heard? This case typifies our descent to our present stage of development. If this is not a wake-up call for our leaders, it must be at least for you and me. A national scandal goes beyond sex videos. It is our inability or refusal to see what is happening to us that is the greatest, and most tragic, national scandal.
