Kris Aquino has forgiven Willie Revillame for disrespecting President Cory Aquino. So there, that should make all things well again and all the people who spent time electronically signing a petition to oust Willie Revillame can just choke on their keyboards!
But we have yet to see if we can give a requiem for the scandal of "Willie Revillame disrespecting Cory Aquino."
The trouble started on August 3, 2009 when ABS-CBN simultaneously showed Wowowee and the live coverage on President Cory Aquino's funeral procession. Wowowee is a global phenomena known for Willie Revillame's rough hewn antics and risque humor. Cory Aquino, even in her death, reminds people of a time when people took to the streets and took back their freedom as heroes.
One part of the screen was devoted to the mindless frivolity that millions of Filipino viewers (not to mention foreigners with Filipino friends) have come to enjoy along with their late lunches or early meriendas. Another part of the screen was devoted to live video of a people mourning the loss of a leader and icon of democracy.
One was all flash, the other is timeless substance.
The two videos clashed and one had to give way to the other... Someone somewhere within ABS-CBN's vast compound on Mother Ignacia in
Thus, Willy asked his station's traffic controller in his typical kanto boy fashion to please take out the inset showing the live coverage of the Cory Aquino funeral procession.
"Kung ganyan, pakita na lang natin 'yan. Kasi nagsasaya kami dito, tapos... Masakit sa akin 'yan, e. Nagsasalita ako dito... 'yan, please.
"Pangit! Hindi ho maganda sa atin. Nagsasalita, ipinapakita yung kabaong ni Tita Cory, hindi ba? Papano kami makapagsasaya, nahihirapan kami? I'm sorry ho, ha. Pero ako, totoo ako, e. 'Wag n'yo akong pagagalitan, kasi totoo ang gusto kong malaman...
"Pagkatapos ng show, ipakita n'yo ang gusto n'yong palabas. Kasi itong Wowowee, gusto ko... Hindi ba, at alam din ni Tita Cory 'yan dahil napasaya rin siya ng show na ito na laging masaya dito, ok?"
As Willie Revillame struggled to swallow the cuss words that normally spews from his mouth and as he harangued his station's traffic controllers -- the people who switch from commercials to programming -- his voice and image boomed inside the Manila Cathedral where the ABS-CBN's main channel was showing on a wide screen. People in the church lurched and almost gagged at the sound of an obviously irate Willie Revillame. And as if that weren't enough, what followed next was the joyless ruckus of the Giling-giling portion.
Perhaps, in the minutes and hours that followed Willie Revillame's outburst, there was some space to think that all would probably understand the Wowowee host and all would be forgiven.
Far from it.
A Youtube video of Willie Revillame's outburst made its way to the blogosphere and was viewed by thousands. Blogs started to register their disgust with Wowowee host and someone even came out with a petition to oust him.
The National Press Club (NPC) and the Alyansa ng Filipinong Mamamahayag (AFIMA) also had to register their protest, feeling offended that the President who restored the democratic right to free speech was treated so shoddily.
Here is the AFIMA's manifesto:
"HE HAS BEEN AT IT NOT ONCE BUT IN COUNTLESS TIMES! His show is so popular that any bad thing he does is mistaken for a fad or 'alright' by the young. Misdemeanors to him are the general rule, good manners are the exception.
"He was caught by millions of viewers in an act as if he was cheating on his prize-giving game. He was heard several times by several millions utter words without regard to repercussions. He does not care for others. He does not care for his country. He does not care for women. He only cares for his ego.
"His is arrogance and greed. What he wants is what he gets. He does not mind the dozens killed in chasing false dreams he created as a culture of his own.
"So many times he has been in it. Yet in no time has he been called to repent. He is sacred even as he desecrates. Every time he does one, he gets bolder.
"We have forgiven him when he did a trick on a prize-giving event. We have forgiven him in countless pasts. This latest caper is already too much. He is already desecrating the symbol of the nation, the symbol of democracy, the "Saint of People Power."
"For him to demand the removal of the little window screen showing the funeral march of the woman who got ABS-CBN back from Marcos is a blasphemy of democracy, an act despicable as him fucking his own mother.
"He may have the right to demand it, but he never waited until the next commercial break to quietly do it. He expressed his angst against Corazon Aquino funeral being shown side by side his "Wowowee" right before the dumbstruck millions of Filipino viewers around the globe.
"For this, Alyansa ng Filipinong Mamamahayag (AFIMA) demands in the strongest terms for the Movie and Televisions Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to give him the hardest lesson for him to learn."
The following day Willie came out on TV apologizing to the Aquino family, then a few more days after that he went on "leave" supposedly because he wasn't feeling well.
Until today, comments about the incident are populating various blogs who have a post on Willie's actuations on August 3 and the world of Filipino TV viewers seem to be divided between those who hate and love Willie.
Among all the comments, perhaps the one with the most weight would be Kris Aquino's -- after all, she is Willie's friend and the favorite daughter of Cory.
She said: “I can speak on behalf of myself, my sisters and my brother… we accept his apology."
According to other blogs, Willie Revillame said sorry to Kris and other members of the Aquino Family several times over the course of the week and according to Kris, in an interview, the family didn't find anything disrespectful about Revillame's behavior.
If it is all right by Kris, then it should be all right to all of us. REALLY?

It is an on-going tragedy that what we find on Wowowee doesn't show what is best about our country and our people. It regularly shows uncouth behaviour, it shows men and women of all ages gyrating their pelvises and almost grinding crotches, it shows people trading sob stories for money, it shows games where greed for money and the willingness to gamble --not skill or knowledge -- reigns, and host of other things.
Next time we raise a fist of indignation over remarks made by people like Chip Tsao, Terry Hatcher, or whoever else; let us remember Wowowee and ask ourselves if this show adds to or takes away from our negative image as a country.

It is clear to me that Willie did not disrespect Cory and her family at all. Ninety percent of the issue is not about the Cory incident but it's about his past issues that was settled unjustly. His critics are waiting patiently for a moment like this to put him down.

Willie is a moron. But then the station also has its priorities wrong. They miscalculated the viewership preference for that day. Willie's stupid comments rankled on those who wanted to view the cortege.
Both Willie and the stationi are also equally wrong in that Pinoy sensibilities give utmost respect to the deceased. This is not a battle they will win, because who can win against Cory's ghost?

I also see Willie's point - what was blatant on that day was ABS-CBN's insensitivity and greed. Refusing to sacrifice ratings and earnings from sponsors, they decided to air Wowowee and the transfer of Mrs. Aquino's coffin at the same time, so that those who would prefer to watch Wowowee AND those who want to be updated on Mrs. Aquino's wake don't have to watch different channels. Winner!
But ire is centered on Willie because he has been at it for a countless number of times and he always got away with it, and opportunistic as it may sound, the lot of us are "latching on," as some who side with Willie would say, this last straw because we have had enough. We have actually had enough for the longest time but then... he comes back like an incessant nightmare that not even the most ardent of prayers could cast away.

in like manner, i hope that we refrain from giving much attention to willie's antics. the more he is talked about, the more his stature grow and correspondingly wowowee's ratings continuing to burst the roof. sooner or later he will cross the line.. and hell will break loose.

It was his show after all so I say it was his right. Perhaps it would have come across as distrespectful but clearly his whole show is about "kasayahan" right so it's only natural that they don't broadcast anythign otherwise. Willie did cross the line. He insulted the dead. The insult isnt so much what he said, but what he did. He preempted a cortege for a much loved ex-president. Would you have told mourners at JFK's cortege to stop crying and getting emotional?
Willie's insult is that he did not allow us to be mournful at the appropriate time. In doing so, he interfered with out emotional processes. The insult isn't so much to Cory as it is to to those of us who wanted or needed this time to mourn.

The mourning described in my comment was on August 3. That doesnt mean we STILL mourning. And besides, so what if there are those who still are mourning. Who are you to say that they shouldn't?
A traditional mourning period is actually ONE YEAR. So leave those who have to struggle with their feelings, alone.

I was only 10 when Ninoy ran for the assembly in 1978 from his prison cell. We were Laban supporters because my father is friends with Ramon Mitra's nephews.
At the time I didn't understand what was going on until 1983 when Ninoy was shot dead. I was a 4th year San Beda high school student then. Because Ninoy was a San Beda alumnus, we Bedans didn't take it very kindly.
That's why I now feel that I had just lost a mother when Cory left us. At least, she is no longer in pain.

I've been to Wowowee show before, couldn't remember pero it was before the Ultra tragedy. There was a super long queue leading to the studio. To be honest, the show was entertaining, maybe because there was good interaction between hosts and the audience members. Pure escapist show. But at the same time, you kinda feel bad for these people who lined up hoping to strike some luck. They treat Willie like some Messiah. You then realize that Willie has this delusion that he now has some kind of power to transform lives. I even predicted that in the future politicians will line-up to Willie to get his nod instead of the El Shaddai and Iglesia ni Cristo. I was right (Mar Roxas Manny Villar, De Castro). I was told by my nephew who works in ABS that Willie is really untouchable. And it shows naman eh, with that Cory funeral brouhaha. Eh di ba taranta to death mga ABS execs on how to deal with that. They have this dilemma on whether to heavily chastise Willie or cover the mess created by the guy who brings them the bucks. And Willie knows that, playing his trademark "paawa-effects" card by taking a leave of absence. In the mean time, he's spending his time suffering while driving a Porsche to Tagaytay or any of his many many mansions or properly reflecting his mistake while sailing on his yacht.
I don't like Willie or some of his antics but I don't think he did anything wrong by requesting to remove the funeral procession video inset of our former beloved president. He just failed to explain himself clearly that it's inappropriate to show Wowwowee's festive atmosphere and to show the sad funeral procession at the same time in the split screen.

One thing that we can say about Cory is that YES she was the guiding force to topple the dictatorship of Marcus, but as a leader she was ineffective. Even though some of the bad things that happened during her reign might not have been her fault e.g. natural disasters, the debt of the country - she was still not able to change the system of corruption in the Philippines.
SHe was not even able to go and fullfill her promise of significant land reforms, as exemplified by her unwillingness to go after her own family hacienda which resulted in the death of some of her own workers. She was part of a family dynasty that has held on to power for so many years , who owns the majority of the wealth and lands in the country.
SHe did not have the skills to fight for significant land reforms, or changes to benefit the poor people. One more thing, she was also too religious to be able to become a good leader. She supported the CHurch's teachings too much even if those teachinges in itself were either old fashioned, sexist or detrimental to the health and well being of the people.
What legislations has she passed or introduced - during her term - that can be considered a success or shown as effective and that we can be proud of? Because as far as I can see, our education system & our health care system - which are two of the most important to the success & growth of a nation are absolutely shit!
We are basically the laughing stock of South East Asia or even the whole of Asia. China, India, Japan, South Korea, even Indonesia and Vietnam - to name a few are out pacing us in terms of growth and economic development.
So Wa Wa Wa - in fact there is an absolutely humiliating report that was published that shows the Philippines far behind the oher developing countries, unlike them it'll take us 150 yrs or so to be able to achieve the status of a current first world country.
As a person who is concerned for my country I AM CRYING BECAUSE I see how sick and unhealthy the state of our nation is. I see the POOR and sufferring crying out for help, children crying out in hunger and there's only so much I can do to help them. IT is not enough.
